Baking Soda, alias sodium bicarbonate, is a naturally occurring substance that is found in all living things,
where it helps regulate their pH balance. ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda is made from soda ash, also
known as sodium carbonate. To make ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda, the soda ash is mined in the
form of an ore called trona. The soda ash is then dissolved into a solution through which carbon dioxide is
bubbled and sodium bicarbonate precipitates out, forming "Pure, Safe and Natural"

What is the deal with ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda and pH?
As we mentioned, baking soda helps regulate pH—keeping a substance neither too acidic (sour tasting), nor
too alkaline. Think of pH as a see-saw, with acidic pH tilting one way, alkaline pH tilting the other way,
and neutral pH when the see-saw is level. When ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda comes in contact with
either an acidic or an alkaline substance, it's natural effect is to neutralize that extreme pH - tilting the see-
saw back toward level. And beyond that, baking soda has the capability to resist further changes in the pH
balance - keep the see-saw level--this is called buffering.
So what's the big deal? Well for us, this neutralizing and buffering capability is the science behind how
our
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda is so effective for so many uses. Whether it's neutralizing acidic

What does ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda do when you bake?
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda's original use was as an essential ingredient for baking. In dough or a
batter,
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda helps to make the dough rise, also known as leavening. When
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in a batter is heated and combined with acidic ingredients (like lemon
juice or buttermilk), it gives off carbon dioxide which, in turn, causes the dough to rise. This leavening
increases the surface area of dough or batter by causing it to rise and become light and porous, and that

How can I tell if my ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda is still effective for baking?
There is no easy test for determining the acceptability of baking soda beyond the expiration date which
appears on the bottom of every box of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda. For those uses that require
optimum performance, such as baking, we recommend purchasing a fresh box.

What is the difference between baking soda and baking powder?
Can I substitute ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda for baking powder in a recipe?
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda is 100% pure sodium bicarbonate. Baking powder is a mixture of
baking soda and various acidic ingredients. Both baking soda and baking powder are used in baking to help
dough rise, (for leavening). ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda will react in combination with acidic
ingredients in a recipe (like cream of tartar or lemon juice) to release the carbon dioxide that causes dough
to rise. Baking powder, which already contains the acidic ingredients to make the carbon dioxide producing
reaction, is used in recipes without other acidic ingredients.
As they are fundamentally different products, you may not substitute ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda
for baking powder in a recipe. You can, however, make a baking powder substitute using
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda. To make the equivalent of 1 teaspoon baking powder, mix 5/8
teaspoons of cream
of tartar with 1/4 teaspoon ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda.

Will ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda help keep my pool water clearer?

Here's how it works: ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda helps maintain the pH of the water in your pool
in the desired range and provide necessary alkalinity (mineral salts found in water). Recommended pH
control by ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda and a disinfecting agent will keep your pool water sparkling
clear, and your eyes from burning.
How To Use:
For those who monitor pH only: Every week during the swimming pool season, measure the pH and add
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda as indicated below:

To prevent clouding, especially in hard water areas (250 ppm or more) or when using a calcium
chlorinating agent, keep the pH below 7.8 by adding sodium bisulfate or acid if necessary.
For those who monitor pH and alkalinity: Pool professionals advise that baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
be used to provide alkalinity (proper range 80-100 ppm) and that alkalinity and pH be controlled
independently.
Every week during the season, measure the alkalinity and add ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda as
indicated below:

By controlling alkalinity at the proper range of 80-100 ppm, the pH will usually stabilize in its desired
range. However, occasional pH adjustment may be necessary. Therefore, pH also should be measured
every week. If pH is high, add sodium bisulfate or acid in moderation to reduce pH. If pH is low, but the
alkalinity is in the proper range, don't add baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Adjust pH by adding a
chemical with high pH such as soda ash (sodium carbonate) to raise pH rapidly without significantly
increasing alkalinity. Remember to check disinfectant level, and add disinfecting agent as recommended by
the manufacturer.

How does ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda work as a fire extinguisher?
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda can help you in the initial handling of small grease or electrical kitchen
fires? It helps by smothering and cooling the fire. Make sure help is within reach--Keep a package handy
for your first response! Here's how:
For small cooking fires (frying pans, broilers, ovens, grills), turn off the gas or electricity if you can safely
do so. Stand back and throw handfuls of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda at the base of the flame to help
put out the fire -- and call the Fire Department just to be safe! To avoid re-ignition, do not attempt to
move the item until thoroughly cooled. (Don't use ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in deep fat fryers; it
may splatter).
For small electrical fires (small appliances, heaters, outlets), unplug appliances if you can safely do so.
Stand back and toss handfuls of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda at the base of the flames to help put out
the fire -- and call the Fire Department to be sure the fire's completely out! (Here's a hot tip!
Remember never use water on an electrical fire, as shock or electrocution could result!)

How do I deodorize the sink drain with ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda? Can I use it to unclog drains?
Freshen your sink drains any time with a sprinkle of
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda. Sprinkle 2
tablespoons of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda down the drains while running warm water from the tap
for 1-2 minutes. We also recommend that when you're replacing the ARM & HAMMER® Fridge-n-
Freezer® Odor Absorber from your refrigerator and freezer, you 'recycle' the ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda by pouring it down your drains. We do not recommend or endorse the use of
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda to unclog drains.

How long does the ARM & HAMMER® Fridge-n-Freezer® Odor Absorber continue to deodorize in the Fridge or freezer?
We recommend that you replace your ARM & HAMMER® Fridge-n-Freezer® Odor Absorber boxes
every 30 days to keep food tasting like it should. And when you do, replace your Whirlpool® water filter
at the same time.

Directions:
Add 1/2 teaspoon to 1/2 glass (4 fl. oz.) of water every 2 hours, or as directed by physician. Dissolve
completely in water. Accurately measure 1/2 teaspoon.
Do not take more than the following amounts in 24 hours:
--Seven 1/2 teaspoons.
--Three 1/2 teaspoons if you are over 60 years.
Do not use the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks.
Other Information:
Each 1/2 teaspoon contains 616 mg sodium.

How do I test for fabric color fastness?
Better safe than sorry! Before cleaning carpet or upholstery with ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda, test a
hidden area for color-fastness. Mix 1/2 tablespoon of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in 1/2 cup of water
and apply a small amount to the carpet or upholstery. Let dry, then vacuum and check area.

Cleaning Booster-- ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda works with your liquid laundry detergent to make it
work harder for you (it's a pH thing!). Just add 1/2 cup of ARM & HAMMER®
Baking Soda to your wash with the usual amount of liquid detergent.
ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda
can also help your chlorine bleach work harder for you… add 1/2 cup of ARM & HAMMER® Baking
Soda with a 1/2 cup of bleach (instead of the usual 1 cup) to get whites whiter without smelly harsh
chemicals that can damage clothes.
Deodorizing Clothes—Freshen any smelly laundry—work shirts, baby bibs, musty towels—by adding 1/2
cup of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in the rinse cycle to neutralize and eliminate odors. As a cloth
diaper soak, dissolve 1/2 cup of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda in 2 quarts of water to keep those smells
down.
